The Magma Hedgehog, also known as the Ignis Ericius, is labeled as such given the fiery nature of the creature itself. Initially found in the remnants of hardened magma after a volcano had ruptured and the local area had turned to ash and cooled lava. No one is exactly sure what caused these Magma Hedgehogs to occur, some believe it was the evolution of the nearby fauna that soon lost its home to the constant ash and magma in the area. Some believe these small creatures came from the volcano itself, rising from the depths of the earth from deep cave systems that connected to it before the land itself shifted. Yet, there have also been reports of the Magma Hedgehog being found in many Northern Regions and colder climates before such a volcanic eruption. But who is to say exactly what is true and what is myth?

History

Many believe the Magma Hedgehog dates back many, many centuries ago despite the rather sudden appearance of the creature after a volcanic eruption some years ago. It is believed that the animal had made itself home in the deep lava depths and caves near such lava pools in caves. However, no one has ever been able to make such a deep excursion into the earth to confirm such assumptions, which has created much scholarly debate. But others claim the creature was simply a normal hedgehog that adapted to living in mountainous regions and seemed to evolve to withstand the colder temperatures in northern regions.

One famous report of the Magma Hedgehog has to do with a family that had gotten trapped in a snowy land without enough wood to get through the winter season. Which has turned into a popular story told by many northern fairing folk, that of a would-be tragic tale if not for the Magma Hedgehogs. Such a story starts with the family that had become trapped and, eventually, one day one of the children, Leander Magni, had left the home in a tantrum after a disagreement with his sister. While he had run into the snow-ridden forest without thinking, he got lost and was soon enough going to succumb to the unfortunate cold that had taken hold of the lands. But that never came, as a family of Magma Hedgehogs had taken to warming the poor boy and was soon enough found by his father due to the odd firelight the creatures gave off. The family swiftly took to the creature, bringing them to the family home where they had soon made their homes in various nooks and crannies in the home itself. Yet, they proved to be fantastic heaters in times of colder months.

Such reports make many believe there is more than meets the eye with the creature itself, and what causes many to believe they are an older animal that has existed long beyond many others. Although, the lack of any real reaction to what would be predators to the Magma Hedgehog, scientists tend to argue that they must be a newer species given their lack of instinct to defend themselves beyond the fire on their back. All people now know regarding the animal is that they are a beloved pet amongst a variety of households along with being highly sought-after pets in colder climates due to the stories surrounding the animal.

Anatomy

Typically found with the simple charcoal colouring of the body of the Magma Hedgehog, usually to represent that of charcoal itself or sometimes in darker colorations to be more like coal and a variety of shades of fire upon their back. The fire on the backs of these Hedgehogs can go from red to white and all the colours of the rainbow, although many are confused about how they managed such. Some believe said colours come from what they eat, usually found eating small bugs and, oddly enough, glass. How they’re able to digest glass is beyond the many zoologists who have taken the time to research the creatures.

The Magma Hedgehog is also considered rather small, around the same size as the Ellawren Pixie Hedgehog but without the nature on their backs. Notably, however, the Magma Hedgehog seems to thrive at night with the ember-beaming eyes they have that help them navigate the late nights. Most are content to wander at any time during the day as well, it is a mystery which time is their natural time of activity, seemingly content to shift their activity depending on where they are raised and if they are raised domestically.

Additional Information

  • Oddly enough, while they have a peculiar appearance, most have made commentary on the almost lack of awareness as to where they are a lot of the time. Some believe they are not a clever creature and it is impressive they have managed to survive this long.
  • The fire on the back of the Magma Hedgehogs seems to not injure those they consider friends, or at the very least not a threat, otherwise it seems those that act hostile to the creature get a rather nasty burn. And following such thoughts, many scientists are baffled by the fires on the back of the creature given it never seems to burn down any wood or flammable material they touch.

Trivia

  • The Magma Hedgehog is actually quite popular amongst Hellcasters as a companion, being one of the few animals that can handle the heat and fire they have control over.
  • In the colder climates they find themselves in, they are seen as a popular heat source for those who live in mountainous regions and in snowy areas too.
  • A popular nickname for the creature, especially in more northern climates, is to call them Hedgelogs or Firehogs depending on where they are found.
