Overview
Zephyrwings are known for their docile and loving nature, making them perfect companions for the nymphs and Nephi. While they are typically domesticated, wild Zephyrwings can still be found in the untouched parts of Ellawren's forests, though they are rare and known to be incredibly skittish around strangers. They are non-hostile and prefer to flee rather than fight if threatened. Domesticated Zephyrwings are fiercely loyal, and once they bond with a companion, they stay by their side for life.
History
The discovery of the Zephyrwings dates back centuries, when the Forest nymphs first encountered these creatures during the aftermath of the Great Equilibrium. Initially thought to be Fey creatures due to their hybrid appearance and rare sightings in the deeper parts of the forest, they were later proven to be natural residents of Pannotia after a Nephi child guided a brood back to their city, marking the beginning of the species' domestication. Over time, they became more common as companions for both the Forest nymphs and the Nephi, who revered them for their mystical nature and ability to sense shifts in the natural energies of the forests.
Today, the Zephyrwings can be found living peacefully alongside their companions in the forest groves and Nephi cities of Ellawren, but the wild population still exists in the forests, lying peacefully in trees and floating in springs. Forest nymphs often view their Zephyrwing as a reflection of Pannotia’s forests, while the Nephi see them as protectors of their homes, using them to sense intrusions.
Physical Appearance
Zephyrwings typically grow to be about 50 cm (20 inches) in length from head to tail with a wingspan of around 60 cm (24 inches). They weigh between 2-4 kg (4-9 lbs).
- Head: Their head is fox-like, with large, expressive blue eyes and a long thin snout. Their ears are tufted, resembling those of a moth’s antennae, which twitch at the slightest movement, allowing them to detect vibrations and changes in air pressure.
- Body: The Zephyrwing's body is sleek, with four stubby legs and soft, fur-covered paws that make almost no sound as they move. Their body is light and agile, allowing them to navigate between trees effortlessly.
- Covering/Coloration: Their fur is a soft, cream-white that becomes slightly iridescent in the moonlight, while their wings are translucent with hints of gold, giving them a mystical appearance. Their wing veins are strong yet delicate, allowing them to hover gracefully.
- Unique features: Zephyrwings have a unique ability to produce a soft humming noise when they fly, calming their companions and any nearby creatures. Their wings can also glow faintly in the dark, a trait that is both mesmerizing and practical in the dimly lit forests of Ellawren.
Trivia
- Their wing glow is thought to be connected to the emotional state of their companion, shining brighter during moments of happiness.
- Zephyrwings are such good companions that when its owner dies, they rest eternally by their grave site acting as their guardian in death.
