Overview
The Ellawren Trapmouth is a large carnivorous plant that lurks within the deeper jungles of Ellawren, being one of the few things travellers are warned about no matter how experienced a fighter one may be. Being what could only be described as a large version of a Venus Fly Trap with large mouth like bulbs at the top that can easily be described as a foot to two feet long mouth. Usually seen growing in groups of three to six in a patch, growing to being over six-feet in height - and even larger in some cases. This plant is believed to be sentient or at the very least, something more conscious than normal Flora.
Anatomy
As mentioned previously as a large-scale version of the Venus Fly Trap, in truth it’s a bit more complicated and more viscous in appearance. Growing in patches of three upwards to six bulbs at a time leaves it to be described as a ‘Hydra Trapmouth’ outside of Ellawren. It has various vines that lurk about the flower of the jungle where it makes its home in the more moist and darkened areas of such. The Ellawren Trapmouth also has large leaves at the base of the plant where the bulb heads seem to rest when not harassing some poor creature that crosses its path.
The plant itself has a dark green coloring to it, with a variety of other colorings ranging from dark to light greens depending on the flora it surrounds itself with. Having grown to mimic the coloring of similar plants nearby to perhaps be an even more dangerous foe in the deep jungles. The bulb of the Trapmouth is lighter in coloring, when it opens it has a variety of colors from orange, purple, and even yellows within the mouth area of the plant. Some say it is a last warning to danger to come while others have been entranced by such a display despite the thorns within.
Additional Information
The sap that comes from the Trapmouth plant has been found out to be a key component in various alchemy items that are used to deteriorate cloth, plants, and small amounts of skin. It can cause various problems and rashes even if a small amount of skin touches it.
When the sap is distilled however, it is said to be consumable in small doses and offers brief boosts in serotonin for a brief amount of time, making it extremely addictive to those who take it and further advised to avoid the plant.
Some say that the Nightsearcher and the Ellawren Trapmouth have been seen feuding from time to time in brief instances that allowed researchers to observe both the sentient plants at large. This has led many to believe that the Trapmouth is naturally aggressive to anything that moves.
History
While it’s unsure how long the Ellawren Trapmouth has been around, having only been found in the past hundred years or so after a plethora of explorations to the deeper jungles were cut short by unknown circumstances. The plant itself seems to be an experienced predator that remains dormant until it senses movement via its roots underground being able to sense pressure from above the surface. However, many researchers are still testing such with varying degrees of success - mostly negative in nature with the amount of injuries given in the process. Due to such, most are advised to leave the plant be and to avoid particularly dark and wet areas where it seems to grow the most.
The Ellawren Trapmouth has only a handful of written encounters due to the volatile nature of the plant itself and its tendency to eat animals, plants, and people alike that come across its path. One notable encounter was with a Steriin Loren’rae, an accomplished Botanist and Gladewalker mage. Who had the displeasure of coming across such a plant while searching for more plants for alchemical research. A recounting of the tale leaves him to describe how the vines of the plant crawl across the ground to close one in closer to the mouth like looking plant heads with extremely thin but sharpened thorns within its mouth-like structure. The Botanist only managed his escape due to his magic and his quick thinking, now attempting to head this research to properly categorise the plant and understand how it works.
In more recent years, the plant has made its way into that of an unnamed researcher’s garden after they had managed to recreate the proper conditions to planting - and subsequently sustain the plant in a darkened greenhouse. While research is going at a snail's pace, there is now evidence that the dark green like sap that comes from the mouth of the Trapmouth can be used in various alchemical endeavours.
Trivia
- It is a common debate where people claim that the Ellawren Trapmouth should be categorized as a Fauna creature with its seemingly clever nature but so far has resided within the Flora category due to lack of further proof.
- The Ellawren Trapmouth’s sap, which has also been labelled as the ‘Burning Sap’, is still being tested and is not released to the public as it stands. It is considered outlawed in Ellawren due to such.
