Blood rats are a species of giant rats primarily located in the Ironhurst sewers and other large cities. They are known for their ferocious behavior and carnivorous diet. They are pretty territorial towards other animals but work in groups and can become quite dangerous if enough of them get into a horde. Cunning and deadly, a pack of blood rats is the last thing anyone wants to see when traversing any large city’s sewers.
Anatomy
Blood rats are a purely carnivorous species that primarily feed off other animals' blood. They also will eat the meat off the bones of their prey, but their primary source of sustenance is the blood. Their prey consists of small mammals, including other rats, and even larger animals, such as domestic cats and dogs. They can accomplish this task due to their pack-feeding mentality. Despite being highly territorial towards other animals, blood rats love working with their kin to overwhelm their prey, sharing the kill among themselves. If enough rats get together, they can even take down a full-grown person. While somewhat cooperative with one another, if food becomes scarce, the blood rat is not above turning on its allies and cannibalizing them to keep itself sustained.
The Blood rats are relatively intelligent, given they can utilize group dynamics to hunt their prey suitably, but they can also problem-solve rather well on their own. The Blood rat’s intelligence is similar to any ordinary rat, though perhaps even higher. A pack of blood rats is able to corner and surround their prey before pouncing on them with deadly accuracy and cunning.
Physical Appearance
There are two primary defining features when it comes to the blood rat: their large size and bright red eyes. The blood rat is commonly twice as large as an average rat, weighing anywhere from two pounds to even four pounds. They possess long pink, furless, tails and long gray-furred bodies. They have four fingers on each of their four legs and a semi-opposable thumb that allows for grabbing and holding objects. These fingers and thumbs are all tipped with claws that aid in the rat’s climbing abilities and offensive actions. Like other rats, they have rather pointy snouts with pink noses. Unlike other rats, they do not possess the four large incisors but have four long canines that operate similarly to vampire fangs. The blood rats also have two large ears, suitable for hunting and hearing prey.
The blood rats aren’t exceptionally diverse in appearance, almost always having some shade of gray fur and being of similar size to each other. Although the Blood Rat appears to be a rather dull animal, they still possess an impressive aura due to their size and bright red eyes. Regarding gender dimorphism, males tend to be slightly larger than females, and females tend to be skinnier than their male counterparts.
Trivia
- The canine teeth of a blood rat continuously grow like that of other rodent incisors, requiring a blood rat to constantly chew and nibble on objects to keep them short. They often choose to gnaw on the bones of their prey for this.
- Similar to other rat species, blood rats can get confused and end up in a configuration known as a rat king, with their tails tied together due to sticky substances or simply becoming tangled. This is quite a sight to see, often leading to the death of the rats involved.
