Alchemy
It is noted that alchemy is very free form within the confines of Galudon, plenty of smaller alchemy items are free to be made and sold without following the complex alchemy recipes here. However, that is only for everyday items that don’t offer major boons or fixes. As an example of such, think cleaning solutions, fancy mixes for drinks, even silly things like color changing someone's tongue for a brief second. Nothing that offers major things like healing injuries, or keeping warm in the dead of winter.
For any combat-related alchemy AND tier three alchemy, you MUST go through in-character alchemists and take a screenshot over purchasing it from an alchemist in game.
Academic Structure
The mystiscience of Alchemy is the study of turning different agents, oils, and substances to materials that can heal or enhance life for those in Galudon. What began as herbal remedies from different cultures soon coalesced into a formalized school of study at all leading universities. The University of Ironhurst recognizes three levels of alchemic mastery:
- Tier One - Alchemist Apprentice - Typically found to be those just learning and are starting out with the basics of alchemy by some sort of tutor outside of formal schooling. While not cleared to work inside specified labs, they have access to basic alchemy labs and ingredients under the supervision of an alchemy tutor.
- Tier Two - Alchemist Adjunct - Has been enrolled into a formal school and is currently studying alchemy. Has been given clearance to work inside of specified labs and with ingredients under the supervision of master alchemists.
- Tier Three - Alchemist Adept - Has earned a degree from a university or other school of recognized study and certified by officials as a master alchemist. Generally seen as top of their craft, they find themselves with much more ease of creating various alchemical concoctions. They are masters of their craft but still must follow procedures to be legally selling alchemy wherever they reside.
History
Alchemy in the modern tradition originated, ironically enough, in Galudon, formed by the tenacious people of the land during the era of the four Kingdoms. It initially started as a means of curing simple ailments using the natural resources of the world at large while natural medicine was still vastly being advanced. Some have said that the Humans were taught such a thing by a Forest Nymph, or at least someone who had traveled away from Ellawren or beyond, but that remains widely considered as apocrypha in the officially recorded history of the creation of Alchemy. The initial creator of Alchemy is a man known as Rivain Luoch; often referred to as the father of alchemy itself, he began the initial creation process that was later refined by those that came after him, having been the first recorded individual to discover the process of using heated glass vials to refine and make extracts to boil down into elixirs.
While First Alchemist Rivain Luoch initiated the practice, it was further enhanced by his understudy Verona Coalswinter who managed to find a way to make salts and vapours, vastly expanding the alchemist’s repertoire. While Luoch focused further on elixirs and poultices, his understudy found that such salts and vapours could achieve feats outside the reach of her mentor’s techniques. Over the centuries that followed, many of the alchemy concoctions of the modern day were refined and formalised through the work of countless alchemists editing and refining various items. However, there is still room for individuals to be able to make smaller, less well known mixtures or even everyday items, whether from scarcer recipes or concocted with their own abilities. Some make alchemy that affects how people feel when eating food, or even clever creation of drinks, and even now individuals work on improving age-old alchemy recipes and exploring new ones alike.
The Ironhurst University is one of the largest institutions teaching alchemy, alongside a multitude of other topics, but is also involved in the process of approving flora and fauna for use therein. This continues to have a ripple effect throughout Galudon and beyond, with many other countries having taken to keeping a keen eye on the university, keen to adopt the latest discoveries. It is widely regarded as a crucial means of healing individuals, as well as being quite helpful for medical work, with many doctors finding themselves doubling as trained alchemists because of it.
Surprisingly, in recent years, the Eiruks have become quite instrumental in the creation of alchemy. The integration of steamtech into alchemy labs has become commonplace, enabling the mass production of healing poultices and elixirs for common use.
While many cultures near and far have their own alchemical traditions to varying degrees, these rarely align with the rigorously outlined, strictly defined practices of Galudon’s institutions. As such they have found little traction in the region, with practitioners of traditional alchemy from far afield frequently chafing against the regimented Galudonian school when working toward a license.
Creation Process
Alchemy consists of five separate steps that are part of the creation process which is the followed steps;
- Distillation
- Purifying liquid by evaporating and collecting vapor.
- Reduction
- Concentrating liquid through repeated distillation.
- Sublimation
- Forcing a solid to transition directly into gas, usually with heat or chemical additives.
- Blasify
- Grinding solids into fine powders.
- Chrysate
- Using heat to slowly evaporate a solution and crystallize its solutes.
Forms
Alchemy typically appears in one of four forms:
- Elixir
- Liquid, ingested or applied.
- Salt
- Solid crystals or granules.
- Vapor
- Gaseous, inhaled or dispersed.
- Poultice
- Gelatinous solid applied to the skin.
Alchemical Categories
When it comes down to alchemy in use, rather than being categorised by what form they are like elixir or salt, they are grouped instead by function. Currently, all alchemies fall into one of four categories:;
- Recreational
- Alchemy with entertaining or sensory-altering effects.
- Healing
- Restorative and therapeutic alchemical products.
- Contraband
- Alchemy with dangerous, addictive, or restricted effects.
- Aesthetic
- Alchemy that alters appearance or perception.
The tiers of alchemy correspond to levels of investment in the Medicine/Alchemy talent, so e.g. Sagacitas as a Tier Two Alchemy requires 2 points in Medicine/Alchemy to create.
