A fungus that latches onto the corpses of the recently deceased. It holds a deep connection with souls, as they are capable of influencing others to prevent true death- But lack the grace that provides proper resurrection, leaving the host half rotten, but still walking.

History

Initially, the Mortis Fungi’s ancestors were only seen floating amongst hordes of husk undead. Taking great benefit from their decay to become a feast. However, as magic and man connected deeper, the Mortis Fungi became aware of the soul, over time beginning to sap away at it- Becoming stronger until they were capable of infecting the more recently bereaved. This was a process that took decades, as its intense rarity alone made it difficult to survive, and as proper resurrection was more formally introduced it was thought to have become extinct

A recent event, however, caused several spores to be reintroduced into the ecosystem surrounding Ironhurst, allowing the fungus to narrowly escape total extinction.

Trivia

  • The Ellawren Willownest is a popular sigil for various plant-based cults that they’ve taken to using given the history of the tree itself, using it as an example as to why they do what they do is within reason.
