Summers Breath, a type of moss that grows on trees and rocks, is known for its orangish-red hue and the heat it radiates. Many believe it was once a plant that had survived the lava of volcanoes long ago. While many historians and botanists argue that given the usual flammability of plants, it is still prevalent in debates today. However, it has become a popular plant to use in alchemy and darker markets that litter the world at large, although some debate where the lines blur on each side.
History
The orangish-red moss was originally found in the snowy regions of Solgardsborg amidst the forest that many found themselves hiding in during the tense time of Lycans prowling the lands, and many didn’t feel safe. While many hoped the cold would deter the creatures, many forgot the dangers of living in such a climate without access to trading routes and clean water. Despite this, one alchemist managed to find a way to survive the harsh winters by using Summers Breath.
Upon testing the oddly heat-radiating plant and further diluting it, it was found that it could help him maintain heat in his body when all else failed to. The drought became a popular accommodation amongst those he’d occasionally meet and soon became too popular for the one alchemist to handle. While the moss was abundant, there was only so much of the other ingredients needed to make a proper alchemy concoction for the masses. And so he began cutting corners in hopes of helping the masses while keeping what supplies he had stable. However, that proved to be a rather deadly mistake.
While using a majority of the moss in the concoction, while it gave the feeling of warmth in the body it didn’t actually contain it. Soon, many individuals lost limbs due to hypothermia, and the tips of fingers and toes turned blue. While many were upset, there were others who realized that there may be a monetary opportunity, given the right conditions were met…
However, nowadays, Summers Breath flourishes in a variety of places, not just the harsh cold forests and inactive volcanoes. It has become a popular addition to decoration during the winter months in a variety of places.
Appearance
Like all other moss, the moss is typically found clinging to the base of trees. However, the oddity is it tends to only appear in the colder months, typically in early fall and late winter, along with the color of a warm orange sunset that then turns into a more red-like color at the center of the moss growth. Due to such conditions, it grows on various trees and rocks due to such conditions, although no one is entirely sure how or who spreads the moss to other regions beyond Solgardsborg. But many have found themselves thankful for such, given the easier access for alchemists and conmen alike.
Uses and Capabilities
The two major uses of Summers Breath are alchemy and the more nefarious underground use of it by the less honest.
In a more alchemy-based focus on the plant, when the essence of such a plant is extracted and then made into a gel of sorts, it can aid in the creation of alchemy meant to ward off the cold and to keep an individual from getting hypothermia. However, when the proper conditions aren’t met when extracting such and combining it with the right items, it only offers the feeling of warmth.
After that, many have learned that in the harsher, colder months, people are desperate for anything and have taken to extracting the essence to sell to people. However, it doesn’t offer the full effects that a true alchemist can make it into. The flavor profile of Summers Breath also doesn’t help; it has a highly addictive yet bitter taste that many find themselves seeking out due to the so-called ‘help’ it grants people. Thus, it’s become a popular item amongst the black markets and less than honest folk to get money from the needy.
Trivia
- Some tailors have found a way to use the plant itself and keep it alive to sew into gloves and coats for a more warming feeling. However, many have found that it only lasts so long.
- Many florists have found that the moss tends to die quickly when it reaches above a certain temperature, seemingly the plant acutely aware of when fall and winter are around and when they aren’t.
