The Ellawren Willownest is a large tree not dissimilar to a Weeping Willow that is home to a plethora of animals. It is typically seen as an important part of the Nephi, who have tended to these trees carefully for many years. Though now disproven, the Willownests were once believed to hold an important connection to the magic of Pannotia due to their glowing nature,, as such, these trees were nearly deforested to extinction. Luckily, this was counteracted by the Nephi’s proactive policies on saving the Ellawren Willownest trees. In more recent years, it has been considered a sacred tree that helps people connect to the Renganii, a pantheon of gods that are worshipped by the Venyra. Although, no one is certain as to why it has become such a sacred tree.
Overview
These large trees have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Specifically indigenous to Ellawren in various forests, they were once plentiful throughout the land. That was before people began chipping away at the bark and leaves of the Willownest in hopes of finding out if the glowing nature of the tree was connected to magic in any way, shape, or form at the time. While it was eventually proven not to have any connection to such, just having a strange chemical reaction to air, it was too late into the harvesting of these trees to the point where at one point in time there was only a handful of Willownests left in the world.
After the Nephi caught wind of the mass deforestation being done by mages and various power-hungry individuals alike, they began making nurseries for the rare tree. They spread out planted trees in small glade-like structures before spreading them across the continent itself. Each small glade is protected by a designated watcher - typically mages of nature usually Gladewalkers- along with a small group to tend to the Willownest Glades. These Willownest Glades became centre points for trade and travel to the Nephi, acting as prominent waypoints to help direct them throughout the lands.
In recent years, while still rare and hidden away in these Willownest Glades, the tree has begun to recover from the near deforestation due to the greed of times past. Many are still young trees, with new saplings being planted in tandem to grow within the next hundred or so years. While taking a generous amount of time to grow, they are quite hearty and last several hundreds if not thousands of years before beginning to die over time.
Appearance
This large Weeping Willow-esque tree is typically described as an ethereal tree with thin leaves lingering on thin branches with draping vines that are connected to the tree itself. Much of the flora on the Ellawren Willownest has a faint glowing property to them, with each leaf and majority of flora that grow upon the tree being a pale pearlescent white colour. The bark of the tree is a dark brown, with hints of pale white seen beneath the bark once it’s chipped. Various flowers and white moss grow upon the tree towards the base of the tree, which is frequently used by various small animals to hide beneath.
These large trees grow in groups of three to four in these various Willownest Glades throughout the land, while many are grown by the Nephi in recent years, in times before they’d grow in similar patches. Many believe the Elves began planting them in a similar pattern in an attempt to encourage more natural growth in the years to come in hopes of not needing to aid in the regrowth effort at hand.
Uses and Capabilities
- While not usually used in alchemy, in recent years it has been shown that the use of some of the glowing leaves of the Ellawren Willownest offers a pleasing medicinal effect in assisting with numbing the area it's placed upon with just a small sum of the leaves. However, many do have to seek elaborate ways of acquiring such items given the history of the plant.
- The Venyra in more recent years have taken to believing that the tree is important to the Renganii, specifically the one God who represents Life itself for them. Many aren’t sure as to why it became so important to them, perhaps out of regret of the senseless removal of the tree that many mages of their own committed to the poor tree.
Trivia
- The Ellawren Willownest is a popular sigil for various plant-based cults that they’ve taken to using given the history of the tree itself, using it as an example as to why they do what they do is within reason.
