Critter Ferox

Throughout Ferox history, subtypes who evolved alongside each other would amass into societies based on their shared animal ancestry, and share certain universal traits. While there are countless tribes, clans, and civilizations of Ferox certainly yet to be discovered, the wider world is aware of some forefront Ferox societies which have shaped the general perception of each Ferox subtype. In general, Ferox of certain animal types are often perceived in the context of their Dominant Culture’s history, especially by other Ferox. All players should read the Dominant Culture for the type of Ferox they plan to play, even if they plan to use player lore, or establish their Ferox in a different culture. Ferox do not exist in a vacuum. A guide to submitting Player Lore is coming soon!

This subtype of Ferox is a catch-all classification for smaller animals who do not fit neatly into any other subtype page. This includes raccoons, possums, guinea pigs, wombats, bats, otters, et cetera. More subtypes may be added in the future, but for now, if it has nowhere else to go, it likely will go here.

Rabbit Ferox

Rabbit Ferox never let their small size stand in the way of grand ambitions.

Appearance and Biology

Rabbit Ferox are typically smaller than or comparable to other humanoid races, ranging from 3’6” to 6’7”, though that upper height limit does include their tall ears. Their fur ranges from white, tawny, and brown, through to grey and black, often with mottling or distinctive fur patterns around the eyes, nose, and limbs. Their fur can be spotted, striped, pointed, or solid, and their eyes can be pale blue or green, but can also be such a dark brown that they appear black. For some, the whites of their eyes cannot be seen because of their large irises, which lends to the appearance of an all-black eye. Distinct black marks around the eyes give some Ferox the appearance of wearing permanent makeup. Fur length varies from short and velvety to long and silky. They have a small, fluffy tail, and many have digitigrade legs with long feet. They can have additional hair atop their heads, though the line between where this hair ends and their fluffy neck fur begins can be difficult to tell. They have large, prolific families, though only live to be about 50 years old.

Diet

Rabbit Ferox need to eat several times per day, often traveling with some food to go. Their diet is almost entirely plant-based, though they can eat meat in small amounts. Rabbits are always drawn to eat whatever looks delicious, and particularly love sweet things, but they are plagued by sensitive stomachs. When they eat anything uncommon to them, it may cause stomach upset for the following day. Curiously, they may try to eat it again, and over time may even build up a tolerance - but shifting away from that diet will then cause problems once again.

Dominant Culture

The most well-known Rabbit Ferox city is also one of the most secluded and mysterious places in Pannotia. These Ferox are called Purpaureans, and their mighty city becomes more grand the further one descends down into the earth. Purpaurean society is a utopia that venerates geniuses of all sorts, from technicians to artisans, and where the game of socialite politics is at its most extreme.

In the World

Rabbit Ferox have made a name for themselves as brilliant inventors who never let their small size dissuade them from taking up a lot of space. They are passionate, inspired, and creative individuals. They often bring fresh, new ideas and perspectives wherever they go.

Rodent Ferox

Appearance and Biology

Rodent Ferox typically have a long muzzle, short fur, and clawed hands and feet. Even human-like Ferox will display round ears and a long, hairless tail. They are prone to subconscious movements, like fiddling with the hands, tapping the feet, or twitching the ears and nose. Their fur colors are mostly grey, brown, white, or black, with spotted fur patterns being very common. Their bright, vibrant eyes can be shocking shades of yellow, green, or orange, as well as every other color. Albinism is also more common in these Ferox than in others, resulting in a lack of pigmentation which makes them sensitive to sunlight, with pink or pale eyes that sometimes lead to poor vision, and they are prone to hearing impairments.

Additionally, Rodent Ferox are regularly cathemeral, meaning they can function equally well at night or in the daytime, and have decent night vision. Most Ferox in this category are also well known for having extreme reactions to stress. This will vary, of course, depending on the individual. Some will freeze, others will bolt, and many will even fight, but these choices tend to be made very quickly, and even to minor stimuli. Those who do choose to fight are typically formidable opponents, being brazen and unyielding. Those who run are very quick, and those who freeze may completely drop everything they’re holding, or go momentarily numb.

Though these Ferox tend to be smaller in stature than others, there is a somewhat rare tendency for some rodents to grow to an unusual size. Though all rodents can theoretically achieve this, Rat Ferox tend to show it most commonly. In the same way a reptile can continue to grow when given ample space, a Rat Ferox tends to grow when given an abundance of nutrition. The height for rodent Ferox is typically as low as 3’6”, but a lifetime of over-abundance and gluttony, with or without excessive physical training as well, in addition to the right genetics, could allow a highly unusual increase of their size allowing them to reach up to 6'7". This is notable, but not entirely shocking, affecting mostly very well-fed Ferox at the very top of their social hierarchies who have lived a lifetime of abundance and privilege. The maximum age for any Rodent Ferox is around 50 years old.

Diet

Rodent Ferox can eat nearly anything, and have exceptionally strong guts when it comes to handling food that others would consider rotten or inedible. They will often chew their food for longer than one would expect, making finishing a meal with them a tedious venture. This is necessary for the health of their teeth, and they won’t realize how long they’ve been nibbling the same food or chewing the same bite until someone points it out.

Dominant Culture

Rodent Ferox make up the largest part of the population of the City of Cavumborough. Once a thriving city protected by high walls, it is now a shell that only serves as a buffer between the Rabbit Ferox Utopia and violent raiders. Caught in the middle, the impoverished Rodents and other Critter Ferox are ruled over by a brutally efficient Rat Mafia that uses deception and fear to keep all the power for themselves, and gives nothing back.

In the World

Many are aware of the existence of the Rat Mafia, and similar attitudes of distrust and disgust are often levied at Rat Ferox, whether deserved or not. Rodent Ferox who resemble mice are often seen as diminutive and fragile, or easily startled. Many Ferox have little respect for any Rodents, as they are part of a cycle of abuse that has existed for centuries. They are the targets of more powerful Ferox clans, they are captured and sold into forced labor, and they are manipulated and taken advantage of, even by their own people. But, this is not to say that they are disliked. Cities with a Rodent Ferox population may find that these people are very attuned to simple joys and home comforts, with a tendency to collect things they love and create beautiful, comfortable homes where their friends can visit for tea or a home-cooked meal. They are most commonly known to also have a twin or triplet, with a usual assumption that if you meet one Rodent Ferox, you’re likely about to meet several more.
