Avian Ferox

Throughout Ferox history, subtypes who evolved alongside each other would amass into societies based on their shared animal ancestry, and share certain universal traits. While there are countless tribes, clans, and civilizations of Ferox certainly yet to be discovered, the wider world is aware of some forefront Ferox societies which have shaped the general perception of each Ferox subtype. In general, Ferox of certain animal types are often perceived in the context of their Dominant Culture’s history, especially by other Ferox. All players should read the Dominant Culture for the type of Ferox they plan to play, even if they plan to use player lore, or establish their Ferox in a different culture. Ferox do not exist in a vacuum. A guide to submitting Player Lore is coming soon!

Appearance and Biology

Avian Ferox include aspects from every species of both large and small birds. These Ferox always have feathers, with some having a beak and talons as well. The colors of Avian Ferox feather are as varied as the birds themselves, with patterns mimicking actual birds, any colors therein are possible. Eye colors follow the same rules, meaning Avian Ferox may have the eyes of any existing bird species. Avians can also fly, either with wings that come from their back, forearms, or hips, though those whose wings double as their arms will still have hands at the ends of their wrists, either with fingernails or hooked claws. Common accessory feathers also include tail feathers, and tufts atop the head which create a crest or mimic the appearance of two pointed ears. Avians may or may not have typical human-like hair in addition to their feathers; ranging in any natural Human hair colors. Their height is comparable to humans, ranging from 5’0” to 6’7”, though they do live a bit longer, reaching up to 130 years old.

Because of their close ties to the Kingdom of Galudon, many Avian Ferox continue to speak with a Galudonian accent. However, those with a beak will have a slightly unique accent of their own, as they can only mimic certain phonemes that come naturally to humans. The “p” and “b” sounds, for example, cannot be made without the use of lips, and are thus mimicked very closely, but do sound slightly more like a “click” than their human-language counterparts. With enough practice this can become almost indistinguishable, though for some it is very obvious.

Diet

Avian Ferox can eat anything that humans can, and have an easy time digesting nuts and seeds, though a surprising number favor carnivorous diets. Curiously, they have a particular love for spicy peppers, enjoying the flavor but being almost completely unaffected by the burning sensation of capsaicin. This leads to the common mistake of Avian hosts providing a meal to guests that is, unbeknownst to them, exceptionally spicy.

Dominant Culture

Most people who live near large cities or trading ports where airships dock will be quite familiar with the Avian Federation of Trade, which acts as a neutral trading partner to many kingdoms with its fleet of airships and prestigious captains. The AFT is currently experiencing something of a civil war between the Trading Companies which govern it, and the rebellious Harpies, who are independent airship captains that oppose the monopolistic rule of the Federation Executives. Bloody aerial battles are fought between the commercial companies and the sky-pirates, with no one able to tell for certain who will inevitably crumble before the other.

In the World

Because of the large economic presence of the Avian Federation of Trade, and the historic ties between Galudon and these particular Ferox, most humans are quite familiar with at least a few Avians in their home cities. Avians are known to either be elitist and wealthy, or to fit in amongst city criminals and pirates. In general, it’s assumed that most city Avians serve on an airship, or work on the clerical side of operating a trading company, doing paperwork in a tall company tower, sending letters, or making deals both legal and otherwise.
