Spellbinders are known for crafting magic spells, and preserving arcane knowledge all across Pannotia.

Overview

The academics of the magical world, Spellbinders participate and lead in the study of the craft of spell-making. They studiously catalogue magical knowledge and the art of spellcraft. Spellbinders have the distinct ability to tease out the required magical words to solidify spells. Their magic supports the spellbinder’s goals of preserving and protecting magical knowledge. The first known spellbinder went by the name of Louisa Pearson, who was responsible for extensive work on early technomancy spells. While earlier spellbinders have been lost to the dark ages of history, their collaborative nature remains with the existence of mage covens and the regular meetings between magical schools. Spellbinders can usually be found organizing their local mages into working groups, or working with academic institutions to assist in the preservation of knowledge.

Spells

Tier One - 1 point invested

Off the Page - Spellbinders can cause ink collected in written work to temporarily leap off the page and splatter over a person’s face. The ink remains on the face for about ten seconds before returning to the page and forming the correct words. To cast this spell, the person must roll their Mystic ability score against a target within emote distance. The target must make a contested roll using their Dexterity ability total to dodge the attack. The ink will cause temporary blindness, providing a disadvantage on the next 2 rolls. This ability can only be used once for every combat scenario.

Copycat - The spell can create an exact duplicate of a written work. To cast the spell, the caster must provide a blank paper or a book where the work will be transcribed. The blank vessel must be placed over the written one, and the caster should lay both hands on the blank pages. As a result, the text will be transferred from the original work to the blank one. However, the ink on the original piece will appear noticeably lighter. This ability can only be used once every 2-days.

Autodict - The Spellbinder can enchant a quill to transcribe their speech; once the caster has finished, they may end the dictation by tossing the inkpot into a fire. This ability has no cooldown.

Tier Two - 2 points invested

At Your Fingertips - When a spellbinder wishes to summon a piece of written knowledge, the caster must be within emote distance of the source of the writing. The path between the spellbinder and the writing should be clear and unimpeded. To catch the knowledge, the spellbinder needs to hold out their hand and concentrate on the summoning process for two emotes. This ability has no cooldown.

Nom de Plume - This spell is used to identify the author of a written document. To cast this spell, the caster needs to hold the physical document and a blank strip of paper. Once cast, the spell reveals the name of the author on the strip of paper. It's important to note that as soon as the name is revealed, the strip of paper will last for three emotes and start to burn away after the duration. Additionally, the "Copycat" spell cannot duplicate the strip. This ability can only be used once daily.

Lost in a Book -  The caster can use paper to wrap or mummify a person from the base of the neck down. To use this spell, the paper must be within emote distance of the caster and have a clear path to the caster. When the spell is cast, the paper will fly through the air and tightly wrap around the victim. The caster can use paper from bound books, but the book will be destroyed. The caster must roll their Mystic ability score against the target's strength roll to cast the spell. If the roll succeeds, the target will remain bound if the caster keeps their fist closed. At the end of each turn, both the target and the caster must re-roll their abilities again to try and escape. This ability can only be used once per combat scenario.

Tier Three - 3 points invested

A Thousand Cuts - When the caster casts this spell, small pieces of paper will be summoned to create a whirlwind around a target within emote distance. Each paper fragment will inflict one paper cut on the victim. The papers will continue to swirl around the target until they successfully inflict a cut, after which they will disintegrate. The caster can end the spell by making a fist. To activate this, the caster must roll their Mystic ability score against their target's dexterity. If the caster successfully hits their target, they will roll a 1d16 for damage. This ability can only be used once per combat scenario.

The Magic Word - Spellbinders can connect with ambient potentia and decipher words of power. Creating a spell involves:

  • Clear goals.
  • The desired spell’s function.
  • Collaboration between two casters of varying expertise.

The Spellbinder and their partner must collaborate to craft spells, combining specific words with precise hand movements or other amplifiers. A single caster cannot create a spell alone. If you are a Spellbinder and wish to initiate the spell-creation process, you must submit a request ticket. Additionally, you need to have a caster partner and have participated in role-play related to the spell's creation.

Once the spell is crafted, it replaces the Magic Word Spell in the Mage's grimoire. This ability can be used once weekly.-----
