Born from sinister magic, something lost to time itself where no one is entirely sure what created these nightmarish creatures, the Corphaun now prowls through moist and forgotten lands. Typically portrayed as a monster coming out of a fairytale to get children to behave and sleep at night rather than being out past twilight, it is anything from but. Actual reports of the shambling corpse of a black panther with rotten features, no one is sure how it survives but no one has been able to truly study the creature without near-death experiences being the norm. Such a creature has been deemed a threat to anyone who gets close to it, being sought out frequently enough by bounty hunters wanting to claim downing such a being. Yet, many stories have blossomed from such hunts, typically ones of warning to be cautious of being too prideful given the statistic of those who come back alive are in the single digits.
History
The Corphaun was said to be of a necromancer’s attempt at a spell gone wrong, but the truth is much worse given the number of them now rather than it being a singular monster lurking around. Such a creature was one of an unknown amount created by a man by the name of Coreanne Krinn, a mage that aspired to find out the answer to life itself. Such an aspiration led the man down a twisted path hundreds of years ago to begin his experiments on animals of varying sizes, swiftly taking to black panthers as test subjects as he had a hatred for the animal for a reason lost to time. Such experiments led to the creation of the Corphaun, a monster that while initially looking normal would begin to rapidly rot and grow more hostile as it was taken over by the suffering it found itself in. Notably, it would keep a short life span of a couple of years, typically less than three due to its inability to survive the rot.
Despite such a brilliant mind of Coreanne, his sudden disappearance from the world has led many to believe the man has been eaten by his own experiments. However, this has only been even more so enforced by the sightings of Corphaun’s beginning to wander throughout Pannotia at large. Although, it is a wonder that such a monster is still spreading, even if at a slow pace and with the rare sightings of such a beast. Many have been led to believe that the monster can reproduce, somehow, although nothing has been proven beyond the danger that they offer to anyone unfortunate to cross their paths.
For some strange reason, most Corphaun’s have taken to residing in abandoned graveyards lost to time, or even going as far as to chase people away from graveyards. Some believe this is because the monster has an innate fascination and connection with the dead, seeing themselves as protectors of those who are no longer alive. However, sightings of the creatures being seen digging up graves and seemingly living off the bones of the once-living has made many argue although that was only one claim from a hunter that was chased by such a monster. Some believe it a tale that was spun and the truth was the man had unfortunately wandered into the monster’s territory itself and didn’t wish to admit to such.
Physical Appearance
The Corphaun itself has a similar size and general appearance of a black panther, being portrayed as a usually agile creature, however, as it ages further it rapidly changes. Once it reaches past the first couple of months of being alive, or re-alive as some claim that it can’t be any normal creature given its twisted life span, its body begins to decay. Typically starting around the main body of the creature, it gets immensely thin with patches of fur beginning to fall off. Around this time, they begin to show irritation to other creatures being in their vicinity, something that rapidly grows and turns more hostile the further they age.
As it gets older, the Corphaun’s face begins to turn more bone-like with even more unnerving rot taking place on it. But as it gets older, it gets even more deadly to those around it, beginning to attack anything in sight or anything it smells or hears. Its vision begins to deteriorate towards the end of its life span, becoming that of what it is known for. A decrepit shambling creature that looks pitiful but will be even more deadly in the last week, leading many to believe this is why no one has managed to successfully beat the creature. With it completely forgoing any fear, it attacks relentlessly and with rotten sharp canines in its maw. Leaving many people who find themselves bitten by the said creature with infected wounds that most succumb to unfortunately, such is the reason for their being so little known about them in regards to what can actually kill the beast beyond its lifespan.
Overview
It is widely known that some have taken to believing that one particular Corphaun, reportedly deep in a marshland is the man who created the creature, cursed by the Fey for the suffering Coreanne inflicted on the natural order.
Corphaun’s seemingly, oddly enough, shy away from Nymph’s in one odd report. Perhaps being fearful of the natural order they nurture throughout life and the way they are the exact opposite of such.
Trivia
- Corphaun’s are usually not seen first but smelled from a mile away given the rotting scent and active decay the monster goes through.
- There is only one famous incident of one of these monsters causing a major disruptive incident in a small town, for one reason or another, it had taken to prowling through the town and had successfully turned it into a ghost town.
