Reptile Ferox
Throughout Ferox history, subtypes who evolved alongside each other would amass into societies based on their shared animal ancestry, and share certain universal traits. While there are countless tribes, clans, and civilizations of Ferox certainly yet to be discovered, the wider world is aware of some forefront Ferox societies which have shaped the general perception of each Ferox subtype. In general, Ferox of certain animal types are often perceived in the context of their Dominant Culture’s history, especially by other Ferox. All players should read the Dominant Culture for the type of Ferox they plan to play, even if they plan to use player lore, or establish their Ferox in a different culture. Ferox do not exist in a vacuum. A guide to submitting Player Lore is coming soon!
Serpent Ferox
Appearance and Biology
Serpent Ferox features include scales, especially around the brow region of the face or across the body, as well as slitted cheeks or lips, and sometimes even banded, smooth bellies. Certain species, like Cobra, Mamba, and Coral Snake Ferox, always have their prominent fangs on display. Colors and features are as varied as snakes themselves, with some favoring aquatic adaptations, cobra hoods, or even rattles. They can have hair on the head or body, though many remain entirely scaled. Their eyes come in all colors, often multiple colors, and sometimes with unique patterns or radiating lines from the pupil, which may be round or slitted. Often a pupil appears round, though it will take on a slitted shape when feeling extreme emotions like fear or anger. For narrative and rp purposes (such as emoting alchemy and character descriptions) snake Ferox can be venomous, though this has no use in combat or IG mechanics. Not including the length of their tail which slithers on the floor, they stand between 5’0” and 6’9”, and can live for up to 120 years thanks to the various alchemical concoctions they have invented to prolong their lifespans.
Serpent Ferox often live in warm places, and those who have never left their homes struggle to acclimatize to colder regions (though they will, given a few years). They can choose at will to shift between two bipedal legs, or a long tail that supports their upper body, or two legs and a tail from the tailbone. Some who integrate into other societies choose to mask their more intense snake-like features. Most, however, choose to boldly display their serpent appearance, which is at times both unsettling and strikingly beautiful. Serpents who resemble Vipers are the most likely to use Ferox shifting to make their appearance more humanlike, retracting their fangs and blending easily into other societies, though always showing some amount of reptilian scales on their skin. In fact, Serpent Ferox are the only subtype where nearly all of the population can shift, and many do it regularly.
Some Snake Ferox have snakes amidst their hair, or replacing their hair entirely, which grow from their head. These snakes can’t be cut, nor do they eat, though some may display personalities of their own. Serpent Ferox can lengthen or shorten their head-snakes at will.
Diet
Serpent Ferox only need to eat once per week, if they eat a large enough meal to sustain the level of activity they’re doing. More physical demands on their body will require more food, up to one meal per day. The longer an individual waits to eat, the more they become sluggish and struggle to maintain their body temperature. Serpent Ferox who routinely forgo meals will take on a sickly pallor, dull eyes, and eventually a weak heart. Those who try to match the eating habits of other races will sometimes eat one or two very small meals every day, which has led to the habit of trying to form “the perfect bite”. Serpents may spend an inordinate amount of time crafting the “perfect bite,” meticulously combining all the ingredients, in the right amount, so that any bite can be their entire meal. If they do not like a meal, they will simply stop for the day, and eat more tomorrow.
Dominant Culture
The Veneficar are a Serpent Ferox clan made of many smaller enclaves each trying to achieve their own version of perfection, often resorting to assassinating and overtaking one another in a constant history of simmering conflict beneath a veneer of surface-level diplomacy. No information is considered forbidden, and any means are acceptable if they lead to the desired outcome. Highly spiritual, and venerating of magic, rituals, and alchemy, they often travel the world seeking out new knowledge or valuable skills to bring back to their enclaves.
In the World
Snake Ferox have several lingering stigmas that make others distrustful of them. For one, the Veneficar are a brutal clan with draconian practices, including corporal punishment. Even those with no affiliation to them might be haunted by their influence, as they’re well-known assassins and poisoners. Due to their innate resilience to poison, Serpent Ferox typically need very strong alchemical solutions and medicines, which also lends to a suspicion among other alchemists. However, Serpent alchemy is known to be some of the best in the world, and their remedies are often known to be effective when all else has failed.
Since many Serpent Ferox travel to seek knowledge and advance their skills, they blend easily into any society that will allow them to fit in. They are often non-judgmental to others, and make for relaxed, easy company, even if there is always a little fierceness in their reptilian eyes. There are approximately four million Serpent Ferox, with less than half of them living in the city of Veneficea.

Dinosaur Ferox
Appearance and Biology
While their ancestors are fabled to have been towering giants, modern Dinosaur Ferox still reach the impressive maximum height of 7’2” tall, or they can be as small as 4’5” tall. Many have a prominently hunched back and a forward-sloping posture, while others walk perfectly upright. It is common for their neck and chest muscles to be especially pronounced to support their large heads, giving a trunk-like appearance for their upper bodies. While their animalistic traits exist on a spectrum, those who exhibit the most beast-like features will have wide-set eyes, a wide mouth, finger and toe claws, osteoderms (bony skin bumps), spikes, horns, scales, frills, and sometimes feathers or hair. All will have a tail, and some amount of non-human coloration. They can have toothy jaws, or beaked or bill-like mouths. Some can also exhibit more unique traits such as head crests, sails, and vertical plates.
Spikes can exist on the tail, shoulders, hips, spine, face, and just about anywhere else. Skin and scale colors vary, though always in natural colors ranging from white, grey, and black to every shade of brown, and reasonable shades of yellow, red, orange, green, and blue. Stripes, spots, and other interesting color patterns are all common, and many have a paler color on their belly than on their backs. Depending on their nearest animal equivalent, they might have column-shaped feet like a sauropod, or they may have between two and four scaly toes.
To note, these Ferox only include non-avian dinosaurs, and not flying reptiles (such as pterosaurs), nor prehistoric birds or bird-like dinosaurs (archaeopteryx). Many non-avian Dinosaur Ferox have feathers, whether or not it is certain that the dinosaurs they resemble ever did. This is a result of Ferox breeding, and not a declaration of how dinosaurs, the prehistoric animals, appeared in nature. The maximum age for Dinosaur Ferox is 150 years old, though most die long before that thanks to their brutal lifestyle.
Diet
Despite their brutal appearance, many Dinosaur Ferox are vegetarian. But whatever they eat, they have prodigious appetites, and will generally eat until there is nothing left. Dinosaur Ferox who do eat meat will often be able to fit large portions in their wide mouths at once, with no qualms about crunching and swallowing bones, meat, and all - though the more polite may stifle this urge when in company. Anyone who hosts Dinosaur Ferox for dinner ought to know that it’s wise to give them space, as the sharpness of their teeth and the strength of their jaws could lead to serious injury if one were to reach across the table at an inopportune moment.
Dominant Culture
On a string of active volcanic islands, Ferox of The Deinarch Kingdom have survived enough near-extinction level events to have adopted a “live fast, die fun” lifestyle which includes bloodsport and endless revelry, all in the name of the gargantuan Tyrant King T. Rex, who they see as a living god.
In the World
Dinosaur Ferox have one of the smallest populations of the Ferox subtypes, due to the constant catastrophes that have decimated their people throughout history. Those who migrate to the mainlands are generally known to be strong-willed and irreverent. It’s somewhat commonly known that many Dinosaur Ferox in the world are either exiles from their islands, or are the descendants of those who were exiled after upsetting their King. Violent groups like mercenaries, raiders, and warriors often readily accept these reptilians into their ranks. There is a curious number of shamanistic Dinosaur mages, as well. They dominate sporting arenas and seem to have a highly competitive nature, eagerly appearing in tournaments and sporting events alike. They also introduced the world to the popular house pet, Trillies, who are cat-sized arthropods with calm temperaments. There are approximately ten thousand Dinosaur Ferox in the world, making them the smallest population of any known Ferox subtype.
