Throughout Ferox history, subtypes who evolved alongside each other would amass into societies based on their shared animal ancestry, and share certain universal traits. While there are countless tribes, clans, and civilizations of Ferox certainly yet to be discovered, the wider world is aware of some forefront Ferox societies which have shaped the general perception of each Ferox subtype. In general, Ferox of certain animal types are often perceived in the context of their Dominant Culture’s history, especially by other Ferox. All players should read the Dominant Culture for the type of Ferox they plan to play, even if they plan to use player lore, or establish their Ferox in a different culture. Ferox do not exist in a vacuum. A guide to submitting Player Lore is coming soon!

Hooved Ferox are a diverse subtype which includes all hooved animals, even unicorns!

Appearance and Biology

Members of this Ferox subtype range between all hooved animals, and like other Ferox they can choose how much of their physical appearance is animalistic or human. It is more common in this clan, however, to display an entirely animalistic head with a fully human-like body, giving the classic “minotaur” appearance, with either human-like or hooved feet and corresponding legs. They are typically taller than humans, ranging in height from 5’0” to 7’2”. A more human-like face with hooved feet gives the appearance of a satyr, while some on occasion do resemble near-humans with ears and a tail. These traits may shift slightly from day to day, but the Ferox is always immediately recognizable, and cannot use their animalistic face as a disguise. They typically live to be around 80 years old, with most remaining healthy and active well into their advanced years.

The hair of wooly animal Ferox such as sheep and highland cows is often thickly textured and curly, whereas the hair of horse-like animals is long and straight, while some have no hair atop their head at all save for the natural fur of their animal counterpart. They have excellent hearing, and are often able to rotate their ears to hear more clearly, determining the direction of incoming sounds.

There is an occasional occurrence of some Hooved Ferox being born with one horn that grows from the center of the forehead. This gives a “unicorn” sort of aesthetic, though is not limited based on animal lineage. Horse, deer, goat, and other types of Hooved Ferox can be born with a singular horn. This is generally understood to be caused by the interbreeding of horned and non-horned Ferox subtypes that share a culture and thus have a long history of producing offspring, where the trait for a single horn has become stable enough to pop up now and again. A half-Ferox of any type of Hooved subtype can also have a singular horn, even if that half is Horse or Deer related. This trait can also be coupled with a tail that is long and thin, with a tuft of hair at the end, like a mix between an ox and a horse tail.

Diet

Hooved Ferox are almost exclusively vegetarian, though some do adopt a taste for meat if they’ve grown up eating it. One habit of note is that Hooved Ferox will sometimes sort their food for their favorite parts, meaning that if someone has them over for dinner, they may notice all the carrots have mysteriously vanished out of the salad. In more extreme cases, they will unconsciously sort their food on their own plate, or have an aversion to meals that are “too mixed up”, preferring their food to be separated.

Dominant Culture

The Clan of the Grove-Keepers are the most recognizable culture of Hooved Ferox, even if they have been in willing isolation for most of their history. They commit to a belief in both the Tame and the Wild side of a person’s spirit, and often decorate themselves in natural materials to display their personality to others.

In the World

Hooved Ferox are generally seen as self-reliant, community oriented people who manage their emotions very well. They can be found meditating in places where nature is allowed to flourish, or in their personal gardens which are the spiritual core of their homes. Because they do not hide their feelings and prefer to simply show the world what sort of mood they’re in, even an ill-tempered Ferox of this subtype doesn’t generally cause issues for their community. One simply has to know the signs that a Hooved Ferox is having a bad day, and stay out of their way - or, offer them a sparring partner.
