New page

Trillies are a modern descendant of trilobites that have branched into land-dwelling arthropods about the size of a house cat. They are particularly popular pets of Dinosaur Ferox of the [[Deinarch Kingdom]], but they have become more common in households across Pannotia who can look past their alien appearance and see them for the domesticated cuties they are. Trillies are fully capable of bonding with their owner, and are often playful, easy to train, and exceptionally easy to care for.
==History==
For as long as Ferox have settled along the coasts of volcanic islands and sandy beaches, Trillies have been part of their daily lives. Excellent at sifting through dirt and fertilizing stony landscapes, they were originally kept in large pens and used to turn soil and fertilize fields. Over the millennia, specific traits have been bred for in Trillies that made them easier to keep as house pets, such as affectionate behavior and intelligence.

Trilly husbandry has led to many distinct appearances among the species, with breeders looking to accentuate their unique features. The difficulty of breeding Trillies is that they take up to ten years to reach maturity, so breeding for specific traits is often a lifelong project. However, given the millennia of domestication, there are plenty of types of Trilly to be enjoyed by modern pet owners.

==Anatomy==
Though Trillies are a diverse species with many unique appearances, the main body plan is the classic flat-profiled and segmented body, with three pairs of legs beneath the head and one pair of legs per segment of the thorax and tail. They have a pair of long antennae, and a hard exoskeleton made of mineralized calcite.

Trilly eyes are on the top part of their head, most commonly wide-spaced on either side. However, some Trilly breeds have tall eyestalks, some have elongated oval eye shapes, and others have no eyes at all.

A common trait that is bred for among Trillies is unique head-shapes. A common Trilly has a round, flat head which flows into the shape of their thorax. However, more unique breeds have interesting spade-shaped heads, with long sharp points to either side, pointing back toward the tail. Some even sport long spines that run vertically along the body, or branch out wildly in multiple directions. They tend to be around 20 inches long, though some breeds are selected for additional body segments, making them up to 30 inches long. They have a maximum height of ten inches.

==Additional Information==
Trillies cannot jump, but they do like to climb things, and people, with their many legs. Large Trillies can weigh up to twenty pounds, with smaller ones around ten pounds. When threatened, they can roll into a ball for defense.

Trillies are not picky eaters, with many families simply feeding them leftovers or even rotting scraps. They like to have food given to them in some amount of dirt which they can sift through, in a pan large enough that they can haul their entire body over it, as their mouths are situated under their head segment and face backward. Hand feeding is also possible, and generally safe, as they have no teeth.

Trillies are capable of making small grunting or squeaking noises to communicate with their owners, though they also communicate by twitching their antennae, shaking their head, rattling their body segments, and stamping their legs.

A well cared-for domestic Trilly can live for up to 25 years, and will tolerate seasonal changes so long as they aren’t left out in the cold. They will shed their exoskeletons often for the first ten years of life, though this will slow down as they reach adulthood, with a Trilly generally molting about 16-17 times throughout their lifetime. At ten years old they will begin laying eggs, usually in a soft nesting spot of their choosing.

==Trivia==
* Trillies cannot be affected by any known illness or disease. Robust and healthy creatures, some scholars have taken to studying their blood to see if it contains any helpful properties that can be shared with humans. However, results are inconclusive for now.

* Pageant-winning Trillies with exceptional traits can sell for thousands of pounds to collectors and breeders of the species.

* Trillies are a popular first-time-pet for many families given their gentle nature and ease of care, though their long lifespan can sometimes lead to them being rehomed several times if a child grows bored with their pet.
